The Murph Challenge Day 15: Natalie Hammerseng
Day 15 of 31 is dedicated to my friend Natalie Hammerseng. Bridget and I have been friends with the Hammerseng’s since our college days. We enjoyed so many great memories and weekend adventures together over the years. When Mike sent us the text that Natalie was diagnosed with breast cancer last April, just three months after giving birth to her third son, Beau, it came with an initial shock. It was hard not to question why, when you think of Natalie being such a young, healthy, and active mom of three boys.
The one thing I told Bridget when we got the news was if anyone had the right mindset, attitude, and faith to attack this head on, it’s Nat. She’s an incredible mom, wife, and friend that has always been positive, genuine, and compassionate. You can literally feel the good energy radiate off of her.
Thankfully, she was able to use all those positive vibes paired with a strong faith to attack chemo, cancer, and surgery and became a cancer free survivor late last year.
When I asked Natalie the biggest takeaways and her key thoughts for those facing their own battles here is what she said:
“Having a positive mindset is everything. Instead of drowning in self pity and asking God why this battle is happening TO me, think about how God is using this battle FOR me.
Breast cancer (my battle) has been part of God’s plan for me from the beginning. So letting go of my own desire for control and putting my complete faith, trust, and hope in God has been liberating. He knew I needed an awakening and now I can’t wait to see what He has planned for me in this next chapter of my life.”
Honestly, as a man of faith, that’s beyond inspiring. That’s life changing! I’m blessed and honored to dedicate today’s Murph Challenge to my amazing friend Natalie Hammerseng.
